The Portuguese scientific production in Medical and Health Sciences increased by 68% between 2004 and 2008

According to the report Portuguese Scientific Production, 1990-2008: Statistical Series recently published by GPEARI - Portuguese Office of Planning, Strategy, Evaluation and International Relations / Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, the Portuguese scientific production in the area of Medical and Health Sciences increased by 68% between 2004 and 2008. The increase in the number of publications was common to all the scientific domains, namely, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Health Sciences and Other Medical Sciences.
Considering the period 2000-2008, the increase in the number of publications in Medical and Health Sciences was 185%, the highest growth registered amongst all scientific areas.
During the same period, there was also a strong and consistent increase in the number of international collaborations (ie, the number of publications co-authored with institutions from other countries) in this area. In 2008, the highest number of collaborations was established with countries such as the U.S., Spain, United Kingdom, Germany and France.
