Education
The Portuguese network of higher education comprises about 170 establishments – including universities and polytechnics, public and private:

In 2008-2009, the number of students enrolled in the several degrees of higher education in Portugal was around 373,000.
From these, 13,429 were preparing a PhD, which represented an 18% increase relatively to the previous year and a 40% increase relatively to 2006-2007.
In 2008, in the sequence of the strong increase registered over the last decades, the number of doctorates concluded in or recognised by Portuguese universities reached a new maximum, close to 1500.

In 2006-2007, the number of graduates (in the several degrees of higher education) in the areas of biological, medical and health sciences exceeded 16,000 graduates.
In the following year, more than 65,000 students were enrolled in these areas.

In what concerns to the doctorates, in 2008 the number of doctorates concluded in or recognised by Portuguese universities in the areas of Life Sciences, and Medical and Health Sciences surpassed 350, thus confirming the increase observed since 1990, when the homologous value was no higher than 70.
