R&D in Medical and Health Sciences

The quality of the Portuguese scientific and technological institutions has been recognised in the evaluation processes carried out in recent years by independent panels of national and international experts.

In the area of Life and Health Sciences, in particular, the results of the evaluation of the R&D Units disclosed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), referring to 2013, show that of the 24 units which were evaluated, 13 were classified as ExceptionalExcellent or Very Good.

The official data (DGEEC-MEC) on the total R&D expenditure and the number of researchers in the field of Health in Portugal – comprising the sectors of Enterprises, Government, Higher Education, and Private Non-profit Institutions – show a considerable growth between 2007 and 2012. Also the number of researchers more than doubled, from 2575 to about 5270 (in FTE - Full Time Equivalent).
